General information

Stockholm is considered by many as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. In recent years, Stockholm has made a name for itself as one of the most creative, most interesting city scenes. Attracted by the city culture, Stockholm now receives visitors from near and far who would otherwise travel to cities such as London, Paris, New York, Milan or Tokyo. Irrespective of whether you are interested in art, music, fashion, design, dining, shopping, nightlife or city trends, Stockholm has more than enough to occupy the most discerning, most cosmopolitan of travellers. Stockholm is an open, clean and friendly city where you can easily walk between one sight and the next, and can enjoy plenty of other interesting things inbetween.

Nightlife

Club Sturecompagniet (Stadsgårdskajen 152) has been a permanent feature in Stockholm’s nightlife for almost 20 years now. Reopened in 2003 following a complete overhaul, it has several bars, cosy snugs and any amount of dance floor on an area exceeding 800 m2. You have to be at least 23 to get in.

Anyone who sees music as more than just sound and background noise and has a thing for jazz simply has to visit the “Fasching”: Sweden’s most important jazz club regularly gives new artists the chance to perform, and has hosted practically all the international jazz greats that have been in Sweden over the past 20 years.

An established Stockholm location – the Mosebacke (Mosebacke Torg 3) opens up in the morning during the summer months: a barbeque gets going on the terrace, and you get a fantastic view from the heights of Södermalm. There is practically always something going on in the versatile club, from cabaret and concerts through to club evenings.

Restaurants

Stockholm has a wide range of delicacies in store for culinary connoisseurs and gourmets. Traditional Swedish dishes, for example, are served up in the 280-year-old Gyldene Freden (Österlånggatan 51) and the Bakfickan (Karl XIIs Torg).

In addition to the fantastic view from a height of almost 40 m, Eriks Gondolen (Stadsgården 6) offers excellent Swedish and international dishes and a large selection of cocktails. The prices are as high as its location…

Vegetarians should go to Hermans (Fjällgatan 23 A), which offers comparatively low prices and a great view across Stockholm from the outside terrace.

For a trendy design and moderate prices, try Musslan (Dalagatan 46). The restaurant specialises in seafood and lobster. Music strikes up around 10 p.m., adding a party feeling to it.

Shopping

Whether you have a thing for exclusive fashion and designer articles, antiques or the works of young Swedish artists, you will soon fill your shopping bags in Stockholm.

The city and Östermalm mainly offer Swedish and international brands. The Nordiska Kompaniet (NK, Hamngatan 18-20), one of the largest, best-stocked department stores, is also here.

The Biblioteksgaten is Stockholm’s answer to New York’s Fifth Avenue. Chic watches and designer fashion are on sale here in a noble ambiance for those with the wherewithal.

Fashion and design are frequently combined with cafés and galleries on Södermalm: this is the place for Sweden’s creative new talents to display their stuff – on offer are trendy and chic fashion as well as retro second-hand garments.
