General information

Paris is, without doubt, a cosmopolitan city with legendary charm. When you think of Paris, you think of romance, history and culture. Paris is home to some of the most important sights in the world, such as the Louvre, the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe, the Sacré Coeur basilica and the château de Versailles – plus, of course, the Eiffel tower. If you come to Paris, you need to see the 307 m high Parisian landmark not just from the ground – you need to enjoy the magnificent view of the whole of Paris afforded from up the Eiffel tower. Take a romantic boat trip down the River Seine and simply relax whilst the impressive buildings pass you by. A stroll through the Marais quarter is also worth taking: a former marsh, it progressed to become one of the most attractive quarters in Paris, replete with architectural masterpieces.

Nightlife

The Parisian address 3, rue Royale, is still legendary, even though things were rather quiet in this club for a long time. However, Maxim – also located there – has once again become a top hotspot for after-work parties. The opulently decorated club with a great past is open Wednesday to Saturday between 11.30 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Another permanent feature of Parisian nightlife is the Rex (5, boulevard Poissonnière). The club opens at midnight from Wednesday to Saturday: well-known DJs and a huge dance floor await disco fans – however, you have to be prepared to wait in the long queue before you get in.

Duc de Lombards (42, rue des Lombards) has been offering top-class jazz for over 25 years. Established jazz greats and hopeful talented acts act out their passion on stage, delighting the audience (open daily between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.).

Balajo (9, rue de Lappe), has been around a lot longer, i.e. since 1860 – it is an absolute must for fans of Latin American rhythms and sounds. Salsa courses for beginners are held at 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Holders of a course ID are also entitled to visit the club, which is open until 5 a.m. in the morning.

Restaurants

If you had considered going up the Eiffel tower but couldn’t face the long wait, then simply continue a bit further, and take the restaurant’s lift to the first platform and enter the Jules Verne. Although the interior isn’t necessarily the most up-to-date around, the fantastic view across the city makes up for it – and the rather hefty prices. Opening times: daily 12.15 to 1.30 p.m., and 7.15 to 9.30 p.m.

If you happen to be in the vicinity of the Sacré Coeur and feel peckish, we recommend a detour to the small yet stylish Crêperie Préface (11, rue des Trois Frères). You will find original Breton crêpes here and delicious galettes (waffles) of the highest quality every day between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.

“Le Fumoir” (6, rue de l’Amiral Coligny), right at the back of the Louvre, offers excellent food and very good wines at acceptable prices. The restaurant is open daily until 2 a.m.

If you want to check out a genuine Parisian brasserie, “Le Nemrod” (51, rue du Cherche-Midi) is a good choice. The terrace tempts you outdoors on fine days.

Shopping

Just the sound of the word Paris is enough to get the hearts of fashion-conscious shopoholics racing. The selection really is immense, price ranges vary according to the quarter and brands, little presents and souvenirs are to be had on any street corner.
