NIKI increases capacity utilisation and passenger numbers in first half of year, invests in Vienna International Airport

Although NIKI reported a significant decline in passenger numbers in Egypt and Tunisia owing to the political unrest in North Africa and the Middle East, the airline continued to grow. The number of NIKI passengers at Vienna International Airport was up by around 29%, accounting for a third of all passenger volume gains at the airport. This development once again makes NIKI the fastest-growing airline at Vienna’s Schwechat airport. Capacity utilisation also rose, by 4 percentage points to 73%.

This increase is attributable to the steady expansion of the scheduled network. NIKI continues to place particular emphasis on business travellers – the airline has added more services to Zurich (now served four times daily) and Copenhagen (now twice daily), and introduced Valencia (new destination) and Malaga (five times a week).

Vienna International Airport continues to play a major role in NIKI’s expansion plans, and is rapidly gaining significance as a hub between north and south and east and west.

Niki Lauda explains: “Expansion of this hub within the airberlin group means our passengers benefit from more connecting flights, greater frequencies and better departure times.”
