Highlight on the opening day of the Vienna Ferien travel show– speed dating with Niki Lauda on the NIKI stand

ferienmesse1501.jpgThe NIKI stand (Halle A, Stand No. A0329) was besieged when Vienna’s Ferien travel show opened today. The reason: “speed dating” with Niki Lauda in person.

Fairgoers had a unique opportunity to meet the boss of the last Austrian-owned airline face to face for three minutes. Young and old alike converged on the NIKI Luftfahrt GMBH stand, although the long queues did give visitors plenty of time to think up a question.

Niki Lauda discussed his favourite destinations and made numerous recommendations for future holidays. “Spain and Greece are classic holiday destinations, and with good reason,” he said. “I’ve had a particularly soft spot for Ibiza for a long time now – it’s a great place to relax.” Lauda’s airline NIKI is scheduling 35 flights per week to Palma de Mallorca this summer (from Graz, Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg and Vienna), and partner Air Berlin will be serving 18 destinations in mainland Spain and Portugal from Palma.

Niki Lauda fielded questions from young ladies about how to become a flight attendant, and queries on the economic crisis in general and the airlines’ situation in particular. And although his expectations for the next few months are anything but rosy he explained that NIKI has a trump card up its sleeve. the airline will be bringing the first two of ten Embraer 190 aircraft on order into service in spring 2009. “The new planes have extremely low fuel consumption, and are the most modern and efficient of their type,” he noted. NIKI will be using the Embraer 190 machines on all its internal European routes.

The three-minute slots went by fast, and souvenir photographs were taken and autographs given. The visitors to the NIKI stand were left in no doubt that “Niki Nazionale” is a very approachable legend, with plenty of useful tips and an open ear for everyone.
